If you employee teleworkers that use a dynamic IP address from their remote location, as most residential installations do, then using a Dynamic IP agent on their workstation can reduce users down time when their IP address changes.

There are several Dynamic IP service providers, some charge a monthly or yearly fee, others are totally free. Some Free versions have limitations such as needing to verify usage every 30 days or requiring you to subscribe to mailing list. You will find a link at the end of this to several dynamic IP providers and you are free to choose the provider and service that best fits your use case.

One such service that is free, is https://duckdns.org/. This site is lacking the refined user friendly polish of other paid services, however it functions just as well.

If you use the service we encourage you to make a donation to their patreon account linked on the home page, as its user contributions that keep the service available for all. For the cost of 2 starbucks coffees, you can have a reduction in your downtime for a whole year. So don't be a cheapskate, and drop a few bucks to keep the good work from them available.

Setting up Duckdns

Setup is pretty straight forward.

Click one of the supported signing methods:

You will get a landing page like the following.

At the bottom where it says 'domains 0/5' Enter a domain name to identify your location. When you add a domain of your subdomain, you will see something like the following. You will need to pick a name that is not used by anyone else.

Now that you have your dynamic dns name setup, you will need to install the and configure the update client on your computer. This part is absolutely critical, as this is the part that allows your dynamic hostname to be updated when your IP address changes.

Click on the "Install" at the top of the screen

Duckdns supports many operating systems, and hardware devices. If you are using a windows computer, select the windows-gui and you will be presented with additional instructions to setup a windows client. If you are using a different operating system, or hardware, select the appropriate option and follow the additional instructions provided.

Using the dynamic hostname to allow access for your teleworkers. Once the account has been setup, you can add the hostname they setup, (e.g. teleworker001.duckdns.org) to your firewall administrator. If your firewall supports dynamic name resolution, they can add that hostname to a policy in your firewall, that will allow connections coming from that hostname.  Now when the users IP changes, it usually only takes about 5 - 10 min for everyone to have a copy of the new IP for the provided hostname.

Make sure that the client is running at all times. If your users closes it, then it wont work.

You can find a list of Dynamic DNS providers here. Each will have its own setup process and rules, just follow along. Total setup time takes about 2 min with most solutions.

VOICE1 does not provide support for any Dynamic DNS providers setup, That's why you pay them for their service, and we don't recommend any one provider over any other, as they all provide the same functions.
